To crate train a powerful or escape artist dog that keeps getting out of their cage, you’ll need a secure, tough and strong crate, designed to be virtually indestructible and inescapable. So let’s take a look at these so-called Alcatraz dog crates, what they have to offer, and how good the various models are at solving your Houdini problem in our 2018 review.

For that matter, purchasing an indestructible crate for a dog is the owner’s best decision. It offers your pooch a safe place that they can use whenever they want. The dog won’t see the metal bars as something that keeps him imprisoned – he will, instead, see them as an integral part of his small cave that keeps him protected from the outside dangers. In other words, he won’t see his new crate as a negative space as long as you use it appropriately.

Place the crate somewhere ‘scenic’ & interesting. It may be beneficial and relaxing for your dog to have something interesting to look at while in the kennel. You could experiment by placing the enclosure near a window so your pet can watch the world pass. The opposite may be beneficial and distractions such as cats and people walking by may get him overly excited and needing to escape.
Hi Kristy. ProSelect is definitely the most heavy duty of them all (but as you noted, VERY expensive). Have you tried this style of heavy duty crate before? If so, you might be able to get away trying a less expensive model like the SmithBuilt. Unfortunately, there are always some dogs who can break out, so really hard to say. Your best bet is the ProSelect, but I know I myself would probably try some of the other models first if I never tried any kind of heavy-duty style crate before.
Some owners had a difficult time with the assembly instructions, claiming they needed to be clearer. This crate is also so big that the only way to really move it is to disassemble the entire unit, so not great for those who want a crate they can easily relocate. And as always, there were a few dogs who managed to make quick work of the crate, although this was relatively uncommon.
Just like with all other equipment, the market is oversaturated with various brands and models of so-called chew-proof and inescapable cages that can’t live up to the task. It can be really challenging to find one that will genuinely suit the needs of your dog, especially if you don’t know a lot about these items. Read our review guidlines for best heavy duty dog crates, and find everything that you need to know before purchasing one of them.
Features: The Ultima Pro is a wire-style crate that is constructed from the strongest and thickest wire Midwest Homes for Pets uses for any crate. It is equipped with two doors (one on the front and one on the side), which each feature two slide-bolt latches. And while it is a sturdy crate, the Ultima Pro collapses quickly and features a strong carrying handle.
A dog's den should be his castle—a place where he can relax. Frisco crates come with a plastic base pan to cover the wire floor and keep things clean. But you can also add a Frisco Crate Mat to make his den even more comfortable. This quilted fleece bed is made from soft Sherpa material with a foam cushion bottom and thick bolster to make your pet feel at home in his den.

Wire dog crates are ideal for pets with long coats or those who live in warmer climates. The continuous air flow keeps them cool while the open design allows them to see their surroundings. Wire and metal dog crate sizes range from X-Small, for a max weight of 20 LBS, all the way up to XX-Large, for a max weight of 140 LBS. While it’s good to know your dog’s weight, you can also reference our crate sizing guide to get a better idea of which size works for each breed.

It also has air vents at the tops and bottoms of the sides and rear of the crate. The front door has the greatest level of airflow due to it’s vertical and horizontal crossover bar design. And of course because the crate is made from aluminum, it dissipates heat much faster than a steel crate could. So this is a crate that you could comfortably in multi-climates. The crate won’t get too hot, and it has ample air flow all around.
It is always wisest to purchase a crate that will last for your dog’s entire life, rather than buying a small one when she’s a puppy and increasingly larger crates as she grows. Instead, go ahead and buy a crate that is suitable for her adult size and use dividers to temporarily shrink the size of the interior. As she grows, you can remove the divider to provide access to the entire crate.
Providing your crated dog with something to do will significantly decrease their chances of attempting to escape as it eases boredom and takes their mind off being confined. Kong goes one step further and has made a chew toy that can house treats. Your crated dog will smell and hear that there is a treat inside and will endeavor to get access to it.

Other than that, one should never forget that events like thunderstorms and fireworks can be very frightening for dogs – some might even try to escape from the yard. In such circumstances, our canine friends tend to hide wherever they can – behind the couch, in the closet, under the bed, and at many other places. They seek areas that are small and enclosed since the cramped walls around them give them a feeling of safety and security.

We purchase this for our German Shepard for when we are not home. He now a little over a year and still not able to be out when not home. This size is huge and makes me feel better when I am at work and he is in his cage. He is comfortable in it with his bed and all his toys. He has tons of room to move around, straight up straight and comfortable. He is bigger than he would probably need but he is happy and make me happy that he has room to play if wanted to. Love the two doors so can be put in a location. Assembly was pretty easy. Need two people to go fast by I did by my self and used a chair to assist me. Would buy again if need be.
As well as being escape-proof, the Impact Case is also fully collapsible. When broken down it measures less than 8 inches in height – Ideal for storage when not in use. It is evident that security is the key design focus as it has an industrial style about it with 3/8 inch round bars that give the cage stability. This crate is also built for pet safety and comfort – The paint is a gray powder that deflects heat, and there are plenty of holes and openings that allow good airflow.

The Stationary version of the crate goes further, it is an IATA 82 dog crate which you will need if you are traveling with dogs more commonly associated as fighting or dangerous breeds. This means that that Stationary Crate’s industrial tough design meets the special enhanced IATA CR 82 dog cage requirements for for travel with pitbulls, mastiffs and other breeds that are claimed to be powerful, aggressive, fighting or dangerous.
