As a pet parent, one of the first purchases you will likely make is a dog crate. The reason is simple—they offer your canine a cozy retreat that’s convenient and in some cases, able to be transported anywhere! With proper training, dog crates can help your furry pal control their bladder and keep them from chewing furniture. But when it comes to knowing which crate is best, that can be tough. To help, we’re going to tell you all about wire dog crates so you can make an informed decision for your canine.
Why We Recommend It: The Zinger Winger DX5000 is probably the toughest and most durable crate I've reviewed. I wouldn't call any crate 100% inescapable, but the aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel slam latches mean the DX5000 is a match for almost any dog. It's also lightweight (compared to other heavy duty models) and has lots of ventilation - the only downside is the price.
Unlike the Impact, the Zinger Winger no dog escape crate uses solid metal steel bars for its door. Dogs will often choose to attack the door, knowing it is both the way he gets in and out. It is important that it is tough and secure. This robust solution works well here. It has a quality locking mechanism. This one uses two flush-mounted slap latches to ensure a secure close. It also uses a full length piano hinge plus striker plate. Its design also allows for reversible door installation. So it’s great for left-handers as well as right-handers.
Another drawback is that it's not the best for home use. While it's listed as suitable for dogs up to 75lbs, this is for car journeys when having space to bang around during a crash isn't a good thing. If you're going to use it as a crate for long periods, make sure you choose a bigger version than you think you'll need (there are Small, Intermediate, Medium and Large options).
The simplest and probably most common way is brute force. Do not make a mistake in believing only big dominant dogs and use this method. If there is a point of weakness in your crate – any size dog can exploit it with some force. One of the most common ways dog’s brute their way to escape is by using their heads to force the bars apart. Cheaply made crates and flimsy metal are susceptible to this.
It is always wisest to purchase a crate that will last for your dog’s entire life, rather than buying a small one when she’s a puppy and increasingly larger crates as she grows. Instead, go ahead and buy a crate that is suitable for her adult size and use dividers to temporarily shrink the size of the interior. As she grows, you can remove the divider to provide access to the entire crate.
