Crates that don’t close securely are pretty worthless, so you’ll want to make sure that any crate you select has high-quality latches. But beware of crates with exceptionally large latching mechanisms, as some dogs will learn how to open the door themselves.  If you have an especially escape-prone pooch, you’ll probably need a crate especially designed for Houdini dogs with double latches or more advanced locking mechanisms.

Providing your crated dog with something to do will significantly decrease their chances of attempting to escape as it eases boredom and takes their mind off being confined. Kong goes one step further and has made a chew toy that can house treats. Your crated dog will smell and hear that there is a treat inside and will endeavor to get access to it.

Features: The Ultima Pro is a wire-style crate that is constructed from the strongest and thickest wire Midwest Homes for Pets uses for any crate. It is equipped with two doors (one on the front and one on the side), which each feature two slide-bolt latches. And while it is a sturdy crate, the Ultima Pro collapses quickly and features a strong carrying handle.
I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for, so I was a little concerned that the Frisco crate was so much less expensive than the Midwest crate. I read the reviews and decided to go with this one. First thing...I got it the next day! That was impressive. After getting the huge box opened and separating all the pieces, it took me about 20 minutes without help to assemble the pleasingly sturdy crate. It did take another 20 minutes to clean up all the styrofoam, but I was prepared for that. The instructions were complete and easy to understand, it was easy to identify the pieces, and assembly was easy. I only used pliers once, and that was due to a piece that I probably bent myself. Because of these and other benefits, we have decided to put the market’s most popular models on a test. We took a closer look at each model’s construction quality, level of comfort, easiness of cleaning, accessibility, level of ventilation, portability, value for the money, and other features. Our short but informative reviews should help you select a perfect heavy duty crate for your dog that will suit the needs of your pup in every way.
As with anything, the best comes at a price, and the Impact Case Collapsible dog crate is no exception! This is a real escape proof dog crate made with absolute precision from quality .063 aluminum which makes it 20% lighter (41lbs) than other dog crates in this category. The strength of the aluminum is complimented with very sturdy rivets. Being made of aluminum makes it also corrosion resistant giving it a longevity that is important when spending this kind of money on a dog crate.
Many people will be reading this because they are looking for dog crates for Pitbulls which are indeed extremely powerful pooches. You will need a good gorilla-tough dog crate to keep them under control. Physical strength is only one aspect of a dogs escape ability! Pooches are intelligent animals and will work relentlessly to find a weak spot and exploit it.

Just like with all other equipment, the market is oversaturated with various brands and models of so-called chew-proof and inescapable cages that can’t live up to the task. It can be really challenging to find one that will genuinely suit the needs of your dog, especially if you don’t know a lot about these items. Read our review guidlines for best heavy duty dog crates, and find everything that you need to know before purchasing one of them.
Hi. I am so confused with all the crate advice. I have a German shepherd with major separation anxiety. She was a rescue dog. Has lots of issues. The complete destruction of my house and going potty on the floor is what I can’t take any more. Shes 16 mos. old. Vet recommended Pro select. Its expensive for me. BUT I don’t want to buy anymore gates or crates!!! I don’t have any couches left. Shes eaten 3 doors, floor boards, etc… I don’t want to find her another home. I LOVE her , and who knows where she may end up when she destroys their things??! I need something that will last ! IF I have to put it on a credit card . so be it. Please let me know what you truly think the best bet would be to contain a crazy shepherd?
The next major consideration when choosing a heavy duty crate is portability. Will you be using the dog crate primarily at home – As a part of the furniture, or will you be using it to transport your dog on a camping trip? There are a few dog crates on the market today that is both heavy duty and collapsible making them ideal travel crates. If you are opting for a travel crate, then the best build material will be wood or aluminum for both strength and portability whereas a home crate is best made out of steel for maximum strength and value for money.
It was a little more complicated to put together than the smaller crates, but it's perfect. My lab has to have cruciate ligament surgery and his current crate is too small with the cone. It is large enough for him to freely move around and for me to actually go in there with him to give him attention. It's big and takes up a fair amount of space, but I am very happy with the purchase. Hopefully, it will minimize the difficulty of the 12 week recovery for an active dog!
Keeping the dog inside is not the only purpose of a pet crate – it also protects the pooch from the dangers of the outside world. During the journey, a kennel has to withstand things like scrapes, bumps, and occasional knocks without breaking apart. Therefore, the heavy-duty models are your best choice – they’re sturdier and more durable than the regular crates.
If you want premium features such as lightweight, collapsible and incredibly strong you do have to spend a fair amount of money for a well built and chew proof crate. This could be seen as a worthwhile investment especially as the life of your dog last many years (hopefully). If you are willing to make a few sacrifices and your dog is not exceptionally strong or aggressive then some cheaper heavy-duty dog crate alternatives will perform the same job.
I'm very happy with this crate's size. One thing I didn't notice was that it does require some assembly (not super hard, but it does take 2 people); I thought it was going to be like my 48" crate that folds. The quality is awesome, especially for the price. I'm very impressed with the Frisco line of products overall, the price is unbeatable. The shipping for Chewy is always great and ofcourse free for a purchase like this, I'm a happy camper.

After sorting through hundreds of models, interviewing dog experts, assembling the top models and lugging them to a veteran trainer for examination, and then trying to break each crate at its weakest points with measured force, we found that the MidWest Ultima Pro is the crate most people should get for their dog. It’s the most sturdy, secure, and adaptable wire crate we found, and it’s designed to last over the lifetime of many dogs. It’s also available in multiple sizes.
