Why We Recommend It: The Zinger Winger DX5000 is probably the toughest and most durable crate I've reviewed. I wouldn't call any crate 100% inescapable, but the aircraft-grade aluminum and stainless steel slam latches mean the DX5000 is a match for almost any dog. It's also lightweight (compared to other heavy duty models) and has lots of ventilation - the only downside is the price.

So I pet sit and crates are a must for those who aren't potty trained so I have a crate in every size and shape. My last 48 broke from wear and tear so I got this one and the price is good but the cage is sort of flimsy. This wouldn't be a brand I'd recommend for anxious dogs or those who try to escape. I have many metal crates and some are stronger than others but I think this one is one of the weaker ones. Still serves its purpose for the calmer dogs who won't paw at it.
Most Helpful review (read the full Amazon review): “PROS: It was very easy to set up, took about 20 minutes by myself. It looks nice too. Great two-day shipping with Amazon Prime. CONS: The eight metal panels are held together by 16 connectors, one at the top and one at the bottom at the points (octagon). These pieces are made of PLASTIC; thus not very strong and susceptible to breaking. One of them broke because one of the panel…“

We purchased this crate as an economical way to move two cats across country. We're currently preparing to be moved by the military from the Raleigh, NC area to Las Vegas, NV. The military will move our house hold goods but not our vehicles or pets, which leaves us forced to move the cats by car and SUV. After researching airline tickets to fly the cats, we were looking at nearly $1,000 to move them. For this crate at less than $100, we're now looking at only a fraction of the cost.
When it comes to security measures, the kennel comes with the so-called “slam” latch, turning the crate into a self-closing model. The combination of aluminum and stainless steel as the primary build materials are guaranteed to provide your pet with the necessary amount of security during the car rides. Another thing worth mentioning is that the model is rust resistant, removing the need to avoid rain and wet conditions.
The reason this crate doesn't rank as highly as the Empire is that it's not quite as escape-proof. I think the top door might be a weak point, so you may want to use a zip tie to stop it opening if you don't plan on using it. The most determined and strongest chewers may be able to attack the bars though - so for these dogs look for sheet-walled crates instead.

Hi Kristy. ProSelect is definitely the most heavy duty of them all (but as you noted, VERY expensive). Have you tried this style of heavy duty crate before? If so, you might be able to get away trying a less expensive model like the SmithBuilt. Unfortunately, there are always some dogs who can break out, so really hard to say. Your best bet is the ProSelect, but I know I myself would probably try some of the other models first if I never tried any kind of heavy-duty style crate before.
Why it's at #6? We put this Midwest Life Stages Single-Door Folding Metal Dog Crate as sixth on the list of best extra large dog crates because several customers had issues with it collapsing, though whether this was from human error or because of faulty conditioning, they weren’t specific. But, when it comes to housebreaking, the dividers in this are very useful.
Observe your dog and see what escape methods he is using to get out of the crate. When you find out the exact way your pooch is employing to break free, then you can work to rectify the problem. You may need to hide behind something or use a camera device because most dogs will wait until they are free from your company before making an attempting escape.

The Prevue Pet Products Home-On-The-Go Single Door Dog Crate is all about providing your pet with the highest level of safety and comfort. Designed to withstand years of use, this dog crate is constructed from heavy-gauge mesh for security and stability, while the powder-coated black finish is non-toxic, durable, and easy to clean. The large front door features a heavier framework plus security locks to prevent your pup from getting out. An extra-deep 1.5-inch plastic pan with rounded corners prevents leaks, contains mess, and can be removed separately for convenient ...

Why it's at #1? I chose to put Midwest Solution Series “Ginormus” Double Door Dog Crate as the first product on this list of best extra large dog crates because we found that it was actually the largest and easiest to clean. Also, the crates are stackable, which is something you don’t find with many crates today. All in all, this is a convenient, safe product for your dog.

The Proselect Empire Dog Cage is a durable and solidly made crate that comes in two sizes. This is a stainless steel dog crate with a side door making it very secure indeed. The stainless steel is finished that protects the steel bars from rust. This crate is designed to be indestructible from any even the strongest animal with durable steel tubing and latched double doors.
The Proselect is far from being portable – lacking collapsibility and being made of steel makes it quite heavy. The crate has four locking detachable casters that allow the crate to be easily moved around the floor to different areas of the house. The Proselect crate does excel at being an indestructible crate at a reasonable price compared to the collapsible & lightweight competitors.
Several owners complained that their dog was able to bend the wires and escape, so this isn’t a good choice for dogs who are escape artists, although it should serve fine for most pooches. Additionally, a few owners reported that while the crate can be collapsed, it’s not especially easy to do, so it isn’t a great choice for owners who plan to travel with the crate frequently.

Why it's at #7? I placed the Prevue Pet Products Home On-The-Go Single Door Dog Crate on the seventh position of best extra large dog crates list because the wiring was not durable for puppies going through separation anxiety, as one woeful tale from a customer showed. Also, several of the crates above it had weight limits of 90 pounds, whereas this one is five pounds less.
A few owners mentioned problems with the crate handle, so you’ll want to be careful when carrying it. Note that some airlines require crates to be fastened with metal, rather than plastic hardware (which is provided with this crate). However, it is easy to pick up some metal bolts and use them to replace the plastic hardware that comes with the crate.
Pros: Customers who chose to take this on camping trips with them found that the mesh held up well against the elements and was mosquito proof. Other customers remarked on the space, finding that being able to put in their dog’s food and water bowls with them in the crate was very convenient. It’s also lightweight and easy to move, despite the size. It’s also very well ventilated and has good air circulation.
Note that some authorities recommend adding 4 to 6 inches on top of your dog’s length when selecting the proper crate size, instead of the 2- to 4-inch guideline we prefer. This is fine if you’d prefer to scale up the crate a little bit, but understand that it is not a good idea to provide your dog with a crate that is too large. Doing so will eliminate some of the benefits crates provide (more on this later), so stay in the 2- to 6-inch range.

I have a rat terrier puppy and wanted to find a quality and reasonably priced kennel for her to begin her crate training, and for use for travel when we make our frequent road trips to visit extended family. Our puppy is expected to be approximately 35lbs, so I purchased the MEDIUM size because I wanted a crate that would also be able ... full review
